about

The Second string quartet Anno cum tettigonia is considered a classic of Lithuanian minimalism. It was composed under the request by Krzysztof Penderecki. The quartet is based on a coherent music material change. This composition represents Kutavičius style that is distinguished by mythologization, the musical text is multi-coloured by abundant symbols and signs and the world of his sounds evolves the mysterious archa- ism. The grasshopper is a symbol of calendar year according to Japanese mythology. So the piece is measured with great precision: it consists of 365 bars (1 bar – one day), every 7 bars a slight change in the rhythm pattern occurs and a new tone is introduced, there is heard a bell altogether 12 times.
