LIUDAS MOCKŪNAS (*1976)
Social for baritone saxophone and string quartet (2002)

Inspired by the aesthetic of minimalism, this piece combines a strictly composed ternary form and graphically notated improvisation. Short rotating motifs in sixteenth notes, first introduced by the cello and the viola and later picked up by the violins, bring to mind a gearbox in mechanical action where gears of different sizes have a somewhat different rotational speed but can maintain a constant speed of movement when engaged together. The saxophone joins in the middle movement where it delivers an improvised harangue, to which the strings respond with drawn-out glissandi and play up to the soloist with approving ricochets and otherwise unarticulated humming until the whole quintet seems to run out of breath and starts gasping simultaneously at a certain point. Then the interlocution resumes, gradually getting into full swing. The opening motifs return in the recapitulation, only this time the strings are joined by a saxophone playing in retrograde before it suddenly shoots up like a balloon rocket.

This piece marks the beginning of my long-term collaboration and friendship with the members of the Chordos Quartet. It was originally composed for string quartet and the Toxikum quintet (feat. Marc Ducret on guitars) that I co-founded with Danish drummer Stefan Pasborg. Later I made a version for strings and solo saxophone, which became the staple of our repertoire with the Chordos Quartet and is therefore featured on this album.
