about

Melody in the Garden of Olives (for two string quartets and trumpet, 2000) was commissioned by the Aksamytna Kurtyna (Velvet Curtain) festival, within the programme of Cracow–Cultural Capital of Europe 2000. At the request of the organizers, music was expected to relate, in some way, to the literary word. In this particular case the links to different texts are indirect, and on the other hand, not formal. In this title there is an allusion to Christ’s last prayer on the Mount of Olives. The coming into being of the music was accompanied by my reading of the New Testament and other texts – amongst them Rainer Maria Rilke’s poem Der Ölbaumgarten. I was musing on these words and many other things: on Johann Sebastian Bach, landscapes recalled and imaginary, and some experiences, very personal in nature. I have not intended to illustrate these reflections in sounds. It was inspirations that gave the impetus for the hymn. This rather ascetic music is an attempt to sing, there is to it. Perhaps it came from desperation, but – it is a step towards hope.
First performance: Stanisław Dziewior, Silesian String Quartet, Dâfo String Quartet, Aksamytna Kurtyna (Velvet Curtain) festival, Cracow, St. Catherine’s Church, 25th of October, 2000.
(This composition has two different versions. Here I embodied the idea for the second movement of my symphony in progress, in a chamber setting. (The first movement was almost finished at that time.) In 2001, I composed the orchestral version of this music which, entitled Melody, together with the first movement – Symphony – makes up that two-movement cycle, Symphony No. 2.)
